helper2

A small box that runs backups and a few side projects.

Nothing exciting lives here. This machine mostly moves files around at night and hosts a couple of things I did not want to pay a provider for. I keep short notes below, mostly so I can find them again in six months.

Notes

• 2026-08-14 Moved the nightly job off cron and onto a systemd timer. Persistent timers survive the box being off, which cron never did for me.
• 2026-07-02 A restore you have not tested is not a backup. Found this out the usual way: the archives were fine, the restore script was not.
• 2026-05-21 Rotating logs on a small disk. logrotate with maxsize instead of a plain daily rotation, otherwise a noisy day fills the partition before rotation ever runs.
• 2026-03-08 Set up monitoring that pages me only when something has been broken for fifteen minutes. Fewer alerts, and I actually read them now.
